How do we pick fruit?

Almost on a weekly basis and at countless free trials, we hear a similar question: “How does Apple-A-Day pick its apples and seasonal fruit?”

It’s a simple process with a lot of checks and balances.

You may have noticed that recently the fruit we’ve delivered to your business has been heavy on citrus, pears, and plums. That’s not by accident.

We do our best to source our fruits from the most-local source. This, of course, means that we get the vast majority of our apples from Eastern Washington (they’re world famous for a reason.)

Our focus is to stay as close to us here in Seattle as is possible. There are times when we need to source some of our fruit from other nations like Chile, Guatemala, Mexico and even as far away as Israel.

The other factor weighing heavily in our decision-making process is season. Back to why you’ve been seeing a bunch of citrus lately. It’s orange season!  That certainly tees us up with the ability to show the diversity of mandarins, oranges and other citrus. (The Cara Cara for instance is a hybrid of the grapefruit and navel.)

What an exciting time though. With Spring knocking on the door, it’s nearly time to move away from citrus and more into stonefruits.

Personally, this is my favorite part of the year. Peaches, nectarines and Rainier cherries are right around the corner and will be in your bins sooner than you know it.
