To organic or not to organic...that's the new question

Something stands out when comparing organic and conventional produce: the price!

Often times, the cost of organic produce is the primary detractor from buying organic fruits and veggies. Sitting side-by-side it can be difficult to even tell a difference between the two.

This week, we look at some less-than-obvious benefits of organic fruit and some negatives.

According to this article by ConnectUS, organic fruits have more antioxidants in them than conventional fruits. These days “antioxidant” is thrown around almost meaninglessly and used as a sales technique, but did you know that high levels of antioxidants have been linked to a decrease in heart disease and other life-threatening maladies?

If you have concerns about your heart, it may be a good idea to look into organic produce to try and help out your circulatory system.

Along with that, many conventional fruits have additives in them, sometimes to add to a fruit’s longevity but it comes at the expense of flavor. Additives in conventional fruit rob some of that flavor and in some cases can cause weight gain.

These additives also get into the soil at orchards and farms and over time, into the groundwater. Organic farms are, of course, without any pesticides or any additives. This is better for the Earth and will benefit us long term.

Now for the less fun parts of organics. Not having those additives means that produce does not have as long of a shelf life compared to conventional fruit and often times is just not as visually appealing.

What’s more, a shorter shelf life means a smaller delivery radius and thus are not as widely available. This also drives the cost up due to supply and demand.
